Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is a compact mediaeval city on the banks of the Danube, close to the Austrian and Hungarian borders. The old city centre is a delight with some fine buildings including St. Martin’s Cathedral, where kings and queens were crowned, and the Primate’s Palace with splendid tapestries. The narrow pedestrian streets house cafés, good restaurants and tempting wine cellars. All this is just one hour by train from Vienna.
